Listening to your feelings: that's how you do it easily

How do you listen to your feelings? I would like to take you to my own discovery in this. On that particular day on which I learned this, my mind was always full of questions, but my gut feeling told me it was good.

HOW DO YOU LISTEN TO YOUR FEELINGS? I WAS ALLOWED TO DISCOVER IT MYSELF

Slightly tense, I was in the car that morning. My head told me all kinds of things, but my feeling said it would be a nice day. As a young mother, education is a gift for me: just a little time for myself. But always a bit exciting. My head was constantly wondering what to expect, but my gut feeling told me that everything would be fine.

It was a family set up training. The concept of family constellations appealed to me from the moment I was briefly experienced in training. But what it actually meant that remained vague. I often work systemically as a child and parenting coach and I thought I could use it in practice. So my curiosity prevailed and I registered for my annual dose of training.

MY FEELING WAS RIGHT

From the moment I entered the building, the jitters in my stomach disappeared and they gave way to enthusiasm and warmth. My feeling was right. I had to do this. Especially the attractive building, the nice incense smell and a pleasant welcome from the people who were there. These things give off a certain feeling, and you can only feel that: you cannot think about it.

The training turned out to be given by two friends. Expert, thorough, warm, but also sober and so funny in their interaction. I felt at home after half a day. Always special to experience when people manage to create a safe atmosphere in a large group. That too had everything to do with feeling. You really had to feel it!

DO NOT LISTEN TO THE QUESTIONS IN YOUR HEAD

My head soon became full of questions while my stomach knew it was 'right'. Family constellations are training that, in addition to a wonderful methodology and new skills, also trains you to let go. Let go of what your head wants to know and just start experiencing and feeling. I think that most people of my generation could use the training for that last lesson alone.

In a set-up, which we were able to experience during the first weekend, someone asks a question about his family. The 'originator' allows that person to choose representatives for his or her family members from 'the public' and can give them a place on what they call 'the empty center' (in our case this was a large rug around which we sat). And then it happens.  And I think you never know what 'it' is beforehand, but 'it' is always special. Insights, revelations, emotions that suddenly find their way out, problems that unfold before your eyes and seem to resolve.

USE THESE 3 TECHNIQUES TO LISTEN TO YOUR FEELINGS

You really have to open up your feelings for this. You don't get there with thinking. But how did I do that?

Look at your body. If you look at your body, it immediately brings you into contact with your feelings.
Move. The more you move, the more you breathe. And that makes you aware of your breathing and all other feelings in your body.
Just take the first thing you feel and trust it. Your feeling is always right, but it will not tell you it very clearly or literally. Go by the smallest first feeling you get.
These were my three greatest ways of getting to my feeling.

FROM THAT DAY I FELT GOOD

Incredibly impressed, full of warmth and with renewed awe for life in general and family systems in particular, I drive back home after the first weekend. Curious as to what is to come, as this was only the first weekend ☺

The basic training Family constellations are given by the core trainers, who each support you with their own style and together to develop your own working method. The goal is that after 10 training days you can use the attitude and principles of systemic work and you can guide group setups in a responsible manner. Even if you are not going to supervise setups, the training is a huge enrichment of your personal and professional baggage.
